Condition
Overall this desk in good condition and ready to place. The piece has been re-polished and the leather top is replaced with marks and scratches consistent with age and use. Minor losses/warping to veneers and one of the handles is chipped. There is lifting to some banding. With overall marks and scratches which are consistant and do not detract. Stamped GILLOWS LANCASTER on one of the drawers. With two keys.

Hugh Roberts, `The First Carlton House Table?', Furniture History Journal, 1995, pp. 124-128 Early references to desks of this type are discussed in Hugh Roberts, op. cit. pp. 124-128. Using an entry from the Prince of Wales' accounts in the Royal Archives, he is able to establish that a table of this form was supplied directly to the Prince for Carlton House by John Kerr, one of the Prince's favoured cabinet-makers, in the late 18th century.
