草間彌生

當草間彌生一九五八年初次踏足紐約,她難以忘記從帝國大廈天台,下向城市的一刻。當年她二十九歲,已經知道要在紐約取得成功,必須作出驚人之舉︰「我渴望成名,抓緊城市中的一切。」(摘自藝術家與Akria Tatehata訪問)隨後,草間著手創作她至今最為知名及享譽藝術界的「無限網」系列,並於一九五九年十月於紐約的Brata 畫廊發表。隨後十五年,草間留在紐約,創作一系列令人驚訝的作品,呈現前所未見的視覺及感情衝擊,強烈而私密,並藉著打破固有的藝術視覺模式,取得廣泛的共鳴,影響歐美藝壇的發展方向。今次拍賣作品《無題》創作於一九七二年,是草間離開紐約回歸日本前的最後一年,豐富的情感及成熟的技法,完滿地總結了藝術家劃時代的紐約歲月。紐約時期後段,藝術家因投身於行為演出,減少了架上繪畫的創作,這讓本作品更顯珍貴。Beatrice Perry是首位支持草間在美國創作的畫廊主持,與藝術家保持了終生長久的友誼關係,此作正是Ms. Perry的私藏珍品。

從美學層面來看,本佳作於草間本人及其創作生涯中佔據著重要的位置。第一,草間六十年代的作品多為單色或雙色作品,唯此作在如櫻花的紛紅色的外表底下,有著複雜而豐富的多色彩層次,包括深藍、白色、黃色及深淺不一的粉紅色,可能是此重要時期的第一張彩色畫布作品。第二,《無題》粉紅翩翩,是藝術家紐約時期作品中,罕有詩意盎然之作,繼承了藝術家早年在日本較為具像的創作方向。回看當年,草間帶同她在日本創作的水彩、水粉畫及水墨畫來到紐約,當中有以靜物、花卉、人像、波點及圖案等為主題,除了顯見早年接受的日本畫教育,亦同時看到法國抽象藝術及歐洲現代主義的影響。這些作品無論在風格及主題上,均與紐約時期早段發表的作品大相徑庭。事實上,草間曾就風格轉變如此解釋︰「如果你在紐約懷著詩意的心,你是不能在紐約立足的」(引述自〈Yayoi Kusama〉,Phaidon Press, 二〇〇〇年,25頁)。

正如Tatehata Akira所觀察,當草間回到日本,「她去紐約前作品中奇妙及詩意的氣質重新出現了。」如此看來,今次拍賣作品,創作於藝術家回去日本之前,屬紐約時期後段,不啻是藝術家精彩及具前膽性的六十年代的完滿總結之作,同時亦預視了日本時期的開端,盡見草間前兩個時期的美學精髓。第三,在無限網的底下,隱含了一個孤獨女孩的身影,此形象約隱約現,令人難以忽略,在此,抽象與具像的交會,預視了草間彌生回歸日本後的具像創作。儘管草間在紐約長達十五年期間,藉著高調而激進的行為藝術,取得前所未有的聲名與認同,但心底下,草間卻是寂寞難耐。她曾言︰「在紐約,我每天與外在世界戰鬥,對於女性來說,這裡是地獄。」(同上,26頁)。

最重要的一點,是草間創作本作之時,剛好是她友約瑟夫·康奈爾去世剛好一年。草間曾言,她與康奈柏拉圖式的情誼,是她此生擁有最為親密及織熱的關係。在此段關係中,草間常住來約瑟夫·康奈爾在皇后區的居所,二人常以對方為繪畫對象。當草間一九七三年回去日本,她身邊就帶了約瑟夫·康奈爾給他的一盒盒報紙剪報及其他併貼材料。(Rachel Taylor, 〈Kusama’s Relationship with Joseph Cornell〉,Tate Blogs,二〇一二年五月十二日)。事實上,約瑟夫·康奈爾於一九六五年曾為草間彌生繪畫肖像,該作品中的女子形象正被置於粉紅色的背景之上,與本作品不謀而合。沉鬱而又激烈﹐本作品具備多種象徵意義,它既同時體現藝術家濃濃的愛意與哀思、亦是她紐約及日本時期之間的橋樑、同時亦體現了草間創作生涯中永恒的主題︰超越一切的治愈力量。
