《無題》是荷里活老牌女星雪莉·麥克琳的肖像,畫者是日本及國際藝壇上的前衛藝術女王草間彌生,此作則是近年拍賣場上最重要的當代藝術鉅作之一。本作繪於一九七〇年,同年荷蘭海牙奧勒茲國際畫廊(Internationale Galerij Orez)舉行「草間彌生肖像繪畫」個展,此畫是其中僅三幅彩色「鳥籠」作品之一,其餘作品都是雙色畫。本畫於一九九八年在日本福岡亞洲當代藝術博物館展出;在此之前,為數寥寥的「鳥籠」畫作一直鮮為世人所知。這個肖像系列的作品少於十幅,主角都是女性名人如莎朗·泰特、朱麗葉·格雷科、拉寇兒‧薇芝、賈桂琳·奧納西斯、瑪塔·哈莉、伊莉莎白·泰勒等。草間彌生極少為其他人畫肖像,此系列是唯一的例外。她在畫布上置一層鐵絲網,將畫中人「困在籠裡」。鐵絲網在畫布上投下的陰影與畫面上的彩色網紋交疊。本作是草間彌生的罕見作品,地位特殊,與她的「無限網」經典主題圖案互相呼應,亦隱喻藝術家在個人精神和藝術創作之路上的掙扎。

本作誕生之時,草間彌生正處於回到西方尋求自主力量的轉折點。草間彌生在「鳥籠」系列繪畫的女性都是有名氣、有地位、而且受到爭議的西方女性,例如瑪麗蓮·夢露、伊麗莎白·泰勒和雪莉·麥克林;這些選擇反映她不屈不撓的志向及對名望的執迷。她談及「鳥籠」系列時,稱畫中人為「壞女孩」,與她在自傳中自稱是「有天分的孩子,同時是個『壞女孩』,承受重重問題困擾」相應。值得留意的是,此系列在草間彌生創作生涯中,是唯一一次以其他女性為繪畫對象。無論此系列之前或之後,草間均沒有以此題材創作。因此,這幅雪莉·麥克林的肖像具有多重意義,同時呈現了這兩位在世最傑出的傳奇女性的故事。
