the flattened pear-shaped body supported on a high splayed foot and rising to a slender waisted neck surmounted by a fierce phoenix head clasping a pearl in its beak, its crest opening to form the quatrefoil mouth, a loop handle stretching from the shoulder to the back of the phoenix's head, the vessel crisply molded with bands of overlapping lappets and radiating vertical ribs at the foot, with teardrop-form panels to each side of the body, each centered with an applied lion mask on a stippled ground framed by four ruyi-shaped motifs, applied overall with a vibrant green glaze, except for the eyes and pearl, applied with straw and cream glazes, Japanese wood box (3)

Condition

The handles has been restored from three breaks. The rim has two chips (approx. 2 cm and approx, 3 cm, respectively). The glaze has expected wear and crazing from age and burial. The glaze has been replaced in some areas, including at the rim, the bird's face (especially to the eyes and beak), and the foot (the foot to three sections: approx. 2.5 cm, approx. 4 cm, and approx. 5 cm, respectively). The base is uneven.

本品綠釉鳳首壺,受薩珊王朝金屬器啟發,並經改變以迎合中國審美品位,其器形及紋飾取材中東金屬器,而鳳首、如意開光、如意紋飾等,均屬中國傳統,反映唐初貿易文化交流成果,具此時期藝術典型特色,尤為珍罕。

鳳首壺,珍珠地貼獸面紋者,甚為罕見,而通體施綠釉者,則更屬稀珍。可參考一三彩例,紋飾相同,售倫敦蘇富比1993年12月7日,編號 139;箱根美術館收藏一例,無珍珠地,圖載繭山龍泉堂,《龍泉集芳》,東京,1976年,卷1,圖版233;另一例載於平野龍治, 《古陶軒撰華》,大阪,1988年,圖版40;第四例出自 George Eumorfopoulos 收藏,現藏於倫敦大英博物館,圖見 R.L.
