This work is in good condition with minor craquelures at the lower left centre and pinpoint surface accretions at the centre. No evidence of restoration under UV examination.

「我所繪的形態,當如生命氣息般運行如流。」──山口長男1

畫題《形態》代表著山口長男創作事業中期的經典構圖。自五十年代末至六十年代初,他以漆黑空間配以赭黃與紅褐創造獨特的幾何形態,成就如此別樹一幟的風格。這些形態以厚塗顏料層層堆疊而成,洋溢雕塑般立體感,看似浮動不定,甚或微微旋轉,如宇宙物象,神秘空靈。

《形態》(拍品編號716)的虛幻動勢展現色彩活力,如同德籍美國藝術家約瑟夫·亞伯斯於同時期創作的豐富系列《Homage to the Square》,他同樣以刀鋒代替畫筆創作,構圖嚴謹分別,與亞伯斯規格一致的漸變效果不同,山口以南中國的土壤為靈感,在黑色背景運用單一黃調,卻依然能透過紋理帶來畫面層次,以構圖帶來幻想,以有機形態帶來動勢。

創作的過程與理念,正是締造動人效果的要素。山口創作每幅作品時,總會堆疊至少七至八層顏料,每層之間自然呼應融和,創出的每一形態各有生命力。藝評家Asano Tōru寫及山口的創作過程:「隨著顏料的厚度增加,色彩之聲亦更見嘹亮。他傾盡全力細心聆聽那股聲音,沿著色彩的呼喚著手創作[…]有時候亦會加以抑壓,形態便在色彩的變化過程重生。」2

由此可見,最終創出的每一形態均是有機而成,注入生命與動勢,經過山口耐心揣摩培養,如同懸空漂浮,生氣盎然。Asano評道:「若說山口之作具東方色彩,相信源於他從不在畫中對自然加諸智性,而是根據自然法則創造形態,如同農夫默默耕耘,自然之跡形形色色,或取法自然,或擴散滿溢,或高聳而立,時而無堅不摧,時而行動如流。」3
