The carving is in overall good condition with typical minute nicks to the edges. There are cracks and tiny losses to the stone that may have resulted from aggravation of original weaknesses in the stone.

此玉雕神獸栩栩如生，靈動自然，面部表情生動，腿部、脊背及獸爪線條強壯有力，雕工精湛。見一相類玉雕神獸例，藏天津博物館，載於《天津博物館藏玉》，北京，2012年，圖版173；另一例售於紐約蘇富比1982年2月26日，編號500；亦有一例售於倫敦蘇富比1986年5月9日，編號670；第四例為 Gerald Godfrey 舊藏，售於香港佳士得1995年10月30日，編號866。

此獸身姿靈動，雙目凸起，與其漢代雛形極為相近。見一辟邪例，出土於咸陽，定代為漢，刊於 Jessica Rawson，《Chinese Jades from the Neolithic to the Qing》，倫敦，1995年，頁364，圖1；另見一神獸例，藏北京故宮，見於《故宮博物院藏品大系玉器篇》，卷4：漢魏晉南北朝，北京，2011年，圖版299。
