Fernando Zobel’s body of works may be seen as a visual study of the artist’s dreams and memories, for many of the paintings were inspired by his past experiences. He was passionate about colors, and their ability to transcend a painting from its two-dimensional framework. Many of the hues were redefined within the paintings to touch upon a specific moment from his life. The artist was largely influenced by abstract expressionism, for the fluidity of the genre’s aesthetics gifted him with a certain freedom that was attractive to his sensibilities as a painter.

Retiro en Invierno is a culmination of the artist’s appropriation of abstract expressionism, for within the painting the use of colors engages the audience in a quiet dialogue that connects with them on an intimate level. The work is a revealing look into his confidence and appropriation of this art genre. Translated into English the artwork’s title means “Winters Retreat”, and as per the artist’s understanding of the natural landscape, the painting is a lyrical adaption of Mother Nature as experienced by the artist during his youth.

Zobel was respected as being a poet-adventurer and his oeuvre aptly reflects this understanding of the external environment. The artist found his creative influence from specific locales, ultimately redefining the external landscapes into a host of colors that succinctly captured the very essence and tone of that time and place. Therefore it can be implied that Zobel’s oeuvre is a visual diary of his experiences, with the act of painting akin to writing down his recollections from that singular moment.

Zobel’s artworks are not loud discourses between him and the audience. Rather they are periods of quietude that resonate with past memories from both parties’ lives, thereby establishing a personal rapport that transcends the physical properties of the works. Retiro en Invierno is a classical portrayal of this relationship, for though the title refers to a seasonal memory from Zobel’s history, the harmony of the colors and stillness of the composition accurately conveys winter’s cold embrace amidst a foreign environment. The painting is the artist’s remembrance of an hour where he was completely free amidst the icy landscape. This liberation has been recaptured within a haze of earthy colors, and is further accentuated by a lone scarlet line that grounds the dream-like quality of the work.
