徐冰是國際知名的當代藝術家，擅用古代版畫及書法技巧，為當代中國藝術開拓新天地，創造出以語言和涵義為題的重要革新之作。1994年，徐冰開始創作《英文方塊字書法》系列，將英文字母融入漢字方塊形態。
《春曉》取材自孟浩然同名詩篇。孟浩然（公元689至740年）乃深具影響力的唐代詩人，以富個人風格的五言律詩而聞名，題材主要環繞山水田園和生活場景。畫中的詩句描述詩人在雨後春曉中醒來，抒發惜春之情。
