The present lot is rendered in an exceptionally naturalistic manner and the composition appears to be rare, with one horse grooming the other in a very tender way. A comparable example with ruby-inlaid eyes is illustrated in Robert Kleiner, Chinese Jades from the Collection of Alan and Simone Hartman, p. 238, no. 187; and another in the Palace Museum, Beijing, illustrated in Jadeware (III), The Complete Collection of Treasures of the Palace Museum, Hong Kong, 1995, pl. 89.
