These double-walled warming bowls were made to hold medicine and food and produced by joining together two bowls of slightly different sizes. The outer bowl commonly had a circular hole at the foot to allow hot water to fill the cavities between the two bowls and keep the vessel and its contents warm.

This bowl is finely potted particularly notable for its delicate painted motif of day lilies, commonly found on Chenghua palace bowls. A warming bowl with a similar design was sold in our New York rooms, 29th November 1993, lot 240. Compare a bowl attributed to the Hongzhi period and painted with a landscape, included in the exhibition Chinese Porcelain in Underglaze Blue from the Nanjing Museum Collection, Sagawa Art Museum, Moriyama, 2003, cat. no. 39; another more sturdily potted and depicting figures on horses, in the Victoria and Albert Museum, London, illustrated in Rose Kerr, Chinese Art and Design. The T.T. Tsui Gallery of Chinese Art, London, 1991, pl. 2; a further two bowls from the Sir Percival David collection and now in the British Museum, London, published in Margaret Medley, Illustrated Catalogue of Underglaze Blue and Copper Red Decorated Porcelains, London, 2004, pls. 696 and A623; and another example painted with a lotus scroll sold in our London rooms, 18th May 1971, lot 192.

The floral scroll adorning the exterior is known on palace bowls of the same period; one from the Sir Percival David collection and now in the British Museum, London, is illustrated in Rosemary Scott, Elegant Form and Harmonious Decoration. Four Dynasties of Jingdezhen Porcelain, Singapore, 1992, p. 52, pl. 51; and another was sold in these rooms 20th May 1980, lot 39.
