octagonal, the centre of each with a classical medallion, inscribed across the base with the title in Cyrillic: Rodomysl, Flight of Napoleon, and Battle of Borodino

Condition

Rodomysl: The signature inscription on white plaster frame is rubbed and appears to have a small area of discolouration due to restoration. Borodino: The title is with yellowing and some very minor losses to Cyrillic letters "B", "A" and "A". The lower left of the white plaster frame with signs of restoration. Flight of Napoleon: there is a shallow chip to the top edge of the white plaster frame. All three reliefs are framed and behind glass, unexamined out of frame.

After the Russian victory at the battle of Leipzig count Feodor Tolstoy (1783-1873) was inspired to create a series of medallions devoted to the major battles of the Napoleonic Wars. The Empire-style medallions became extremely popular not only in Russia but also in Europe and as a result Tolstoy was elected member of all major Academies of Art in Europe.
