This is a complete work from Sibelius's maturity, elegantly and expansively written.  It is unusually advanced among Sibelius's piano works: the shifting harmonies and restless opening syncopation already foreshadowing the music of the Fourth Symphony of 1911.  The piece dates from same year as the landmark Third Symphony Op.52; it was composed just after the first performance of Pohjola's Daughter Op.49 in December 1906.   Both works were part of Sibelius's crucial development from the extended symphonic style of his youth to the greater concision found in his maturity.
