Condition

Gouache, watercolor and pastel on paper. The surface is dirty and there are minor tears along the edges. There are minor spots of paint loss, particularly in each of the four corners. There appears to be a few sections with a small amount of varnish—These areas have minor craquelure. The composition could benefit by being reviewed by a paper restorer. Held in a painted wood frame and under glass. Unexamined out of frame.

The O'Brien family met Pavel Tchelitchew through Alice De Lamar, a friend and socially prominent patron of the arts who had offered the artist a studio on the grounds of her home in Weston. The O'Brien family had a home nearby. Over the course of 20 years, Tchelitchew painted three generations of the O'Brien family including Peggy O'Brien, her daughter Esmé and her grand-daughter Esmé Rosita. Tchelitchew gifted or sold many works to the family, including the portraits and exquisite still life offered here.
