「經由深入的實驗，李石樵確信，新與舊的繪畫都一樣，畫面色彩的質地與配置，有其精確性的道理，真正色彩用得好的畫家，不但用色有超乎凡庸的敏感，也同時應是講究精確度的專家。因此，欲吸收新觀念開拓新畫風，反而需要非常學院式的苦心與功夫。
為了擴張色感的輻度，加強色質的精練，李石樵的配色技巧從調色板演進到畫布上，他發現，許多色澤不是調色板上能調製出來的，只能在畫布上實現。先塗一層顏色，等到乾後，再塗上另外一層不同的顏色，讓底色加上後來的顏色透現出非常微妙的色質。」
