2019 marks the 50th anniversary of the Stonewall Uprising — six days of rolling street protests by gay, lesbian, and transgender individuals that became one of the defining moments of the modern gay rights movement. These advocates no longer asked for respect, they demanded it.
What began on 28 June 1969 changed the narrative of the LGBTQ movement, and that story continues today. In recognition of what is believed to be the largest international LGBTQ pride celebration, Stonewall 50 / WorldPride, Sotheby’s New York is bringing together an interdisciplinary array of works informed by the LGBTQ experience as reflected in the arts from antiquity to the present.
A portion of Sotheby’s buyer’s premium will be donated to The Center, providing programs for health, wellness and connection for New York’s LGBTQ community.
Because progress is never a straight line.
