After the success of our April sale, Milan ARTE MODERNA E CONTEMPORANEA November sale offers a perfect stage for the meeting of diverse period and styles, both by Italian and International artists.
Anchoring the sale is a stunning selection of works by Alberto Burri and Lucio Fontana, which illustrate the richness and unique artistic career of these two celebrated artists.
Executed by Alberto Burri in 1968, Bianco Plastica embodies a mature example of the most important and celebrated series by Alberto Burri, his Plastiche (plastics).
Lucio Fontana’s goldish oil paint, painted in 1961, with its dense materiality, overpowers our gaze and projects it into a transcendent dimension.
The story of Italian post war art is evident perusing the catalogue. Following the decades, you can discover different approaches to materiality by way of the solutions lighted upon by each artist.
The rare vertical totemic sculpture by Leoncillo, Grande Mutilazione, for example, was executed in his later years (1962). This imposing dramatic sculpture testifies the artist’s accomplishment in spatiality research, obtained with a strong presence of light and dark.
Alongside the XX century masters of Italian art, we encounter works by Jean-Michael Basquiat, with a mixed media on canvas executed in 1981, Cy Twombly, encompassing even large canvases executed in the 90ies and 2000s by Alex Kats, Julien Opie and Peter Halley.
Further highlights include an Achrome by Piero Manzoni, a delicate and touching bronze sculpture by Fausto Melotti, La Danza della sposa, and a rare canvas executed by Jannis Kounellis in 1959, the year of his first personal exhibition at Galleria La Tartaruga in Rome.
In the sale, we also find modernist masterpieces by Marino Marini, with a rare Piccolo cavallo filiforme dated 1951 and two Natura Morta by Giorgio Morandi, one executed in 1923 and the other in 1959.
