On Saturday 24 October Sotheby’s offered at auction the collection of Jean-Arnold Schoofs, one of the world's leading strip cartoon collectors. The core of the collection consisted of 65 original pages by the genre's top authors, both American and European, retracing the saga of the "Ninth Art". The sale made €2,703,309 / $2,995,456.
Numerous records were established: five world records for artists were achieved for Jean Graton and Raymond Macherot, and three records for an original page by an artist in particular for Hergé and Edgar P. Jacobs, together with European records for American artists.
The highest price went to the great comic strip authors. Among the front runners was Hergé, whose historic double-page spread garnered €1,563,000: the highest price of the sale, obtaining the world record for a double-page original by the author. Published in Le Petit Vingtième in 1939, this exceptional Indian ink drawing from King Ottokar's Sceptre, with very little text, inspired a battle between four bidders.
Motivated by the success of the Bande Dessinée sale held last March, on 24 October Sotheby’s will present a sale devoted to the finest originals owned by the leading Belgian collector Jean-Arnold Schoofs.
In 2009 and 2010 Jean-Arnold parted with a large part of his collection, but kept works by pioneering American and Franco-Belgian comic strip artists. It is this selection of some 60 pieces that will be offered. Schoofs was one of the first collectors to feel that a quality collection must include the founding fathers, both European and American, which is why there is an interplay between, among others, Hergé, Uderzo and Franquin, and McCay, Caniff and Herriman.
This quality journey through "the 9th art form" [that of the comic strip] starts at the dawn of the 20th century with the American humorists (Gottfredson, Segar, Outcault, etc.) and ends immediately after the end of the war with the Franco-Belgian authors (Jacobs, Peyo, Tillieux, etc), and includes the American realists of the 1930s and 1940s (Raymond, Foster, Hogarth, etc). Hergé and Franquin are among the highlights of this sale.
The Pirates of Silence is one of the legendary albums from the Spirou and Fantasio series. For this famous plate, André Franquin gave free reign to his passion for design and for cars. It is here that Franquin, who picked up on the trends of the 50s brilliantly, unleashed the full magnitude of his talent.
