Our New York auction of Old Master Paintings totaled $4,103,376, led by François Boucher's An Allegory of Poetry, which brought $413,000. Paintings by Hubert Robert performed strongly with the cover lot of the sale, The Distribution of Milk at Saint-Lazare Prison more than doubling pre-sale estimates and fetching $275,000. Robert's pair, An Elegant Company Arriving At A River Belvedere; An Elegant Company Embarking On A Pleasure Boat From The Steps Of A Classical Palace, also sold above estimate, bringing $245,000.The Little Gardener; the Little Shepherdess by Boucher achieved $245,000, over pre-sale expectations.
Following our highly successful Old Masters Week auctions in January 2014, which saw worldwide participation and set over fifteen artist records, Sotheby’s is pleased to present our upcoming Old Master Paintings sale on 5 June 2014 in New York. This auction will feature paintings from a range of European schools and genres, including Renaissance, Baroque, and eighteenth century paintings. Leading a particularly strong section of 18th century French paintings will be the charming allegories La Poesie and La Musique, by the esteemed Rococo painter François Boucher, along with paintings by Hubert Robert, Jean-Baptiste Greuze, and Jean Baptiste Marie Pierre. The Dutch Golden Age is also well represented, with highlights including a marine scene by Ludolf Backhuysen and a pair of musicians from the workshop of Hendrick ter Brugghen.
