The Regards sur L’Orient auction, comprising 126 exceptional lots, reached a total of €1.5 million on Thursday 23 October in Paris. The highest bid went to Frederick-Arthur Bridgman’s magnificent oil on canvas, Jeune femme sur une terrasse, which achieved €133,500. Other works such as Rudolf Ernst’s painting La conversation sous le portique (sold for €97 500) and Filippo Baratti’s oil on canvas La nouvelle favorite (sold for €83 100) succeeded in satisfying collectors. Finally, La belle égyptienne, Auguste Raynaud’s magnificentpainting, sold for €63,900, double its initial estimate.
Encompassing Orientalist art from North Africa to the Bosphorus, this sale is led by Rudolf Ernst’s Conversation in Front of the Portico. This highlight is joined by a selection of Islamic art, including a private collection of 19th-century Ottoman silver vessels, a 14th-century Central Asian engraved tile, and a 16th/17th-century Spanish lustre vase. Offered alongside are a selection of Austrian bronzes, including a cast entitled Femme Fellah by Charles-Henri-Joseph Cordier and another, Seated Smoker, by Gaston Veunevot Leroux.
