This sale draws together some of the finest prints of the past five centuries.
Highlights of the Old Master section include a Private Collection of Important Old Master Prints consisting mainly of portraits by Rembrandt Harmensz. van Rijn and religious subjects by Albrecht Dürer. In this section of the sale, Rembrandt is further represented by fine impressions of Christ Crucified Between the Two Thieves: ‘The Three Crosses’, Christ Presented to his People: Oblong Plate and The Three Trees - among the artist’s most ambitious compositions. Other highlights are Dürer's ‘master engravings’ Saint Jerome at his Study and Knight, Death and the Devil. Also included are works by Francisco José de Goya, Hendrik Goltzius, Israhel van Meckenem and Martin Schongauer, among others.
In the Modern section of the sale, there is a spectacular selection of prints by Edvard Munch, including Eva Mudocci, Separation II, Madonna and the two rare early woodcuts Two Human Beings. The Lonely Ones, among others. Another prominent feature is an exceptional and rare woodcut by Ernst Kirchner, Kühe im Frühling. Printed in a unique combination of seven colours, it exemplifies the technique of colour printmaking which Kirchner perfected in his later life. Pablo Picasso is also featured strongly, with vibrantly coloured linocuts such as Bacchanale, La Femme au Chapeau and Nature Morte Sous la Lampe, and the lithograph Femme au fauteuil no. 1. Other important artists include Joan Miró, Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec and Marc Chagall.
Concluding the sale is the Post-War and Contemporary section, featuring a number of important works by Francis Bacon, including the dynamic Triptyque de la Tauromachie and the boldly coloured Bull Fight No.1. Lucian Freud is represented by Girl Sitting. With the figure placed at the top corner, this is a great example of Freud’s interest in the figure as a dynamic compositional element. Also included are Jeff Koon’s Girl with Lobster and Bansky’s Kate Moss—an homage to Andy Warhol's classic Marilyn (also included in the sale).
A special section of the sale devoted to Pop includes Andy Warhol’s vibrant and boldly coloured Endangered Species series and his iconic Campbell’s Soup Can. These are among the artist’s most sought-after and attractive works, and complete sets are rare to the market. Others of his iconic screenprints include his unique Self-Portrait and Marilyn. Keith Haring is also well represented with both the Bad Boys and Pop Shop series, among other works. Roy Lichtenstein’s Reflections on the Scream, Crying Girl and La Nouvelle Chute are also offered in this section, among works by many other Pop artists.
