Sotheby's New York sale of Modern and Contemporary South Asian Art brought in a total of $3,261,375.
Priyanka Mathew, Head of Sotheby’s sales of Modern and Contemporary South Asian Art in New York, commented: “We saw strong prices for high caliber works by senior modern artists including Bhupen Khakhar, Maqbool Fida Husain and Francis Newton Souza, reinforcing the quest for quality in the field. Six bidders fought for the cover lot, Bhupen Khakhar’s American Survey Officer, which after a prolonged battle, sold for $401,000, almost double the pre-sale high estimate.”
This September, Sotheby’s auction of Modern and Contemporary South Asian Art will feature a selection of significant works by Indian, Pakistani and Sri Lankan artists such as Bikash Bhattacharjee, Lalu Prasad Shaw, George Keyt, Rashid Rana and Zarina Hashmi. Highlights include works by India’s Progressive artists such as Maqbool Fida Husain, Ram Kumar, Krishnaji Howlaji Ara and Mohan Samant.
