This two-day sale presents a stunning assortment of some of the most requested and appreciated Italian and International artists of 20th century. Complementing modern masterpieces by Osvaldo Licini and Renato Guttuso is a wondrously balanced composition by Giorgio Morandi, dated 1943, representing an iconic still life of bottles and common objects. Several works by Lucio Fontana include a powerful terracotta Concetto Spaziale, dated 1963 – 64, a rare gold canvas from the early Quanta series, conceived in 1959, a classic red single slash water paint on canvas and a black Teatrino. Also featured are two bronze works by Arnaldo Pomodoro, Disco and Sfera, both executed in the 1990s, a diptych by Mario Schifano from the 1960s and a widely published Achrome by Piero Manzoni.
A special section devoted to Arte Povera includes significant works by Pino Pascali, Pier Paolo Calzolari and an astonishing embroided tapestry Tutto by Alighiero Boetti, executed in Peshawar in 1988 – 89. Three private collections are included in the sale: the Lea Vergine Art Critic Collection of Milan; theLibero Grande Collection of Naples, which features a Victoire de Samothrace by Yves Klein and a Merda d’Artista by Piero Manzoni; and the Maria Teresa Fendi Venturini and Plinio De Martiis Collection of Rome, a group of nearly twenty works that testifies to the long-lasting friendship and shared passion for art between Mrs Fendi and Plinio de Martiis. The sale culminates in a strong Pop Art finish, with the offering of Andy Warhol’s Torso silkscreen on canvas, 1977.
