Sotheby's sale of Modern and Contemporary Prints on 16th September includes masterpieces in the graphic medium by key artists of the 20th Century. Included in the sale are four works by the Edvard Munch, including superlative impressions of two of his most important subjects: Madonna and Vampire.Matisse's most important lithograph Grande Odalisque à la Culotte Bayadère will also be offered.
It is Sotheby's privilege to offer for sale a spectacular single owner collection of works by Pablo Picasso. The collection includes what are without doubt Picasso's three greatest prints: Le Repas Frugal; La Minotauromachie and La Femme qui Pleure. These works are each singularly important in the development of Picasso's graphic oeuvre, reflecting key themes and demonstrating a mastery of technique that is unsurpassed.
These are the highlights of a collection that is a unique assembly, characterised by a range and quality of works that is unparalleled. It encompasses examples of virtually every technique and style of Picasso's printmaking from impressions of his earliest prints in rare editions, to the seminal series of lithographic progressive proofs titled Femme au Fauteuil through to the groundbreaking colour linocut Buste de Femme d'après Cranach le Jeune.
In the contemporary section of the sale there are rich groups of works by Damien Hirst, Jim Dine, Roy Lichtenstein and Andy Warhol in particular. There are four works from Warhol's celebrated Marilynportfolio including the coveted impression with pink background and yellow hair. Other highlights include Lichtenstein's Reverie, Warhol's The Scream after Munch and Keith Haring's Retrospect.
