Representing some of the world’s oldest and most diverse cultures, the vast region of Asia is celebrated between 7th and 13th September in this week of exhibitions, lectures, events and auctions at Sotheby’s in New York. The auctions are led by the sale of Modern & Contemporary South Asian Art, which features stellar properties gathered from a variety of private collections, including seminal works by M. F. Husain from the 1950s through the 1980s, abstract landscapes by S. H. Raza, serene compositions by Jehangir Sabavala from his early and mature periods, a signature Manjit Bawa and early works by Ram Kumar, Akbar Padamsee, Krishen Khanna and V.S. Gaitonde.

Our Chinese Works of Arts department will be holding a three-session, two day sale of approximately 400 lots. One such notable collection is the Shaw Collection of Qing porcelains, assembled during the mid-1980s from pieces acquired mostly at auctions held in Hong Kong and New York.  Another highlight in the ceramics category is An Important Wucai ‘Fish’ Jar, Jiajing Mark and Period, de-accessioned from the Walters Art Museum in Baltimore and sold to benefit the Asian art acquisitions fund.

Rounding out the week of auctions and events will be our Classical Chinese Paintings sale. With a total of 150 lots, the sale presents a well selected variety of excellent works by the leading artists from Ming and Qing dynasties. An exceptional handscroll by Lan Ying (1585-1666), reappearing on the market eighteen years after the legendary Dingyuanzhai sale at Sotheby's Taipei, will no doubt be much sought after. Noteworthy are two private North American collections, An Important American Collection Part II and Paintings and Calligraphy Works from Dr. Meiling Luh Collection. Each consists of exquisite and enjoyable works that are fresh to the market.
