Americana Week features more than 1,000 lots of furniture, decorative and folk art, silver, ceramics and fine art – many of which hail from notable collections, including the Dudley and Constance Godfrey Foundation, the Mellon Family and more. Sotheby’s American Furniture Department specialises in furniture and decorative arts from 1650 to 1830, with an emphasis on premier examples from Philadelphia, New York, throughout New England and, increasingly, the South. All aspects of American furniture, from formal carved and finished styles to more vernacular examples of painted folk furniture, are offered by this department, with many high-quality pieces available each season at a wide range of prices.

We have achieved the highest annual sale total in 20 of the past 25 years. As noted by the Maine Antiques Digest, “For more than 40 years, Sotheby’s Americana sales have been the barometer of the market.” Our recent sale of American Folk Art from the Collection of Ralph Esmerian totalled $12,955,943, setting a record for any sale of its kind. This highest-ever total for an auction of American folk art eclipses the previous record of the legendary Little Collection, set at Sotheby’s in 1994.

Based in New York, our experienced and passionate specialists lecture frequently and can often be seen on programmes such as Antiques Roadshow.
