A creative form of expression ever growing in popularity, Street Art has evolved from an underground movement rooted in graffiti and hip hop to a highly regarded genre on the global art stage. Sotheby’s Hong Kong Gallery and S|2 are pleased to present, They Would Be Kings, a selling exhibition curated by London based Steven Lazarides, a pioneer gallerist and curator.
Many of these artists have been labelled kings throughout the existence of this movement and artists such as Basquiat have referenced the king and crown emblems as their signature. Largely influenced by the historical use of the term king within the graffiti community, this label nods to the king-makers, or the taste-making gallerists that have built this empire.
Featuring a range of works varying in style and media, this exhibition will showcase ground-breaking artists from around the world such as Basquiat, Banksy, Keith Haring, Vhils, Os Gemeos, KAWS, and Invader.
