In an impressive first in the art market, Sotheby’s France held an auction exclusively dedicated to the Lalannes. Seventy-six lots originating from mainly French private collections documented 40 years of their work, with a selection of furniture, sculptures, works of art and jewellery. The sale, containing numerous unique pieces and limited editions, included works ranging from an egg cup estimated at €200 to a sculpture estimated at €550,000.
Achieving a total of nearly €5 million, results exceeded all estimates and nearly 100 % of lots were sold by value. Collectors from all over the world were amazed by the timeless, poetic works created by these two French artists. The highest price went to the monumental Lapin de Victoire by Claude Lalanne, seemingly straight out of a children's fairy tale, which sold for a remarkable €903,000.
For several years Sotheby's has been proud to present in its 20th Century Design sales the creations of François-Xavier and Claude Lalanne. To fully honour the work of these two French sculptors, Sotheby's is pleased to announce the first sale devoted to this couple known for using nature and animals as an inspiration for their art.
Unclassifiable, the Lalannes have created throughout their careers works borrowing from poetry and have amused and amazed collectors worldwide. Their oeuvre will be represented by an ensemble of pieces spanning 30 years of creation.
