First-rate, exhibited paintings by Abram Arkhipov, Igor Grabar and Abraham Manievich are among the highlights of the Russian Paintings sale, which spans early 19th to mid-20th century Russian art. Two wonderful groups of works on paper by Giacomo Quarenghi and Léon Bakst, together with Dmitri Stelletsky’s L’Armée aux drapeaux déployés remind us of the strength of Russian graphic art across the centuries. The two top lots come to auction from American collections: a dramatic depiction of the birth of Aphrodite by Ivan Aivazovsky, and Three Babas by Philip Maliavin from the family of Catherine Linton, a Russian-born aristocrat who spent much of her life in Paris.
