The November 2013 sale of Finest and Rarest Wines in London totalled £1.3 million. The Moët and Chandon Grand Vintage Collection, which celebrated the legendary house's 270th anniversary, brought £147,333. The top lot of the collection, two bottles of the mythical Moët & Chandon Grand Vintage Collection 1914, sold for £10,340 against estimates of £4,800-6,000. A case of La Tâche 2009 from Domaine de la Romanée-Conti was the star of the two-day sale, realising £25,850. Rare 19th-century Bordeaux from an Important Private Continental Collection attracted global interest, with prices doubling the high estimates, as seen with a bottle of Château d'Yquem 1870, which sold for £7,050.
This two-day sale abounds with superlative wines. The Moët & Chandon Grand Vintage Collection, celebrating this legendary house’s 270th anniversary, features Grand Vintage Collection Champagnes spanning nearly a century, from 2004 back to 1914, all shipped direct from Moët & Chandon’s cellars in Epernay especially for this sale. The Collection comprises 270 bottles of blanc and rosé Champagnes to mark each year since the house’s foundation in 1743 by Claude Moët, together with 174 magnums and 3 jeroboams, to honour this date.
The Important Private Continental Collection features red Bordeaux, Sauternes, Burgundy, Rhône and Italian wines. Highlights include 19th- and 20th-century bottles: Gruaud Larose found on the shipwrecked Marie-Thérèse, believed to be from either the 1869 or 1865 vintage, and reconditioned at the Château with new labels, corks and wax capsules. Haut Brion 1928 and a magnum of Lafite 1945 add to the Bordeaux rarities. Burgundy is not to be outdone, with Clos des Lambrays 1945, Chambertin and Chambertin Clos de Bèze 1986 from Rousseau leading the pack. Stunning Sauternes focuses on Yquem, offered in 19 vintages ranging from 1865 to 2008.
In addition, an exceptional lot of four double magnums of Ornellaia is being offered direct from this Tuscan estate to benefit the Michelangelo Pistoletto Foundation, ‘Cittadellarte’. Comprising the 2004, 2005 and 2010 vintages, the ‘La Celebrazione’ edition of the 2010 double magnum features the special label created by Pistoletto for Ornellaia’s 25th anniversary.
