The 17 April sale of Finest and Rarest Wines begins with Bordeaux Super Seconds from the fabulous 1982 vintage and leads into a mouth-watering array of First Growths and top Right Bank wines from exceptional years. Lafite-lovers will be thrilled with offerings of the extraordinary 1945 vintage, previously stored in the cellars of an Oxbridge college since its original en primeur purchase, and three complete cases of the fabled 1982, recently removed from the cellar of a magnificent English country house. Château Mouton Rothschild is the focus of a private collection of Classed Growth Bordeaux spanning 1978 to 2001, with Mouton 1989 available in bottle, magnum, double magnum and jeroboam. Further Bordeaux blockbusters include Le Pin 1998 and a parcel of Pétrus 2000.
A collection of Henri Jayer’s Cros Parantoux, from the cellar of a Continental wine writer, features a twelve-bottle lot of 1989 and a nine-vintage vertical from 1988 to 1999. Another private collection of Henri Jayer, purchased directly from the domaine, is exemplified by a rare bottle of Richebourg 1979 and a five-bottle lot of Richebourg 1987. There is a tempting range of Rhône from top producer Paul Jaboulet Aîné and a wonderful Italian selection from Allegrini, Antinori, Aldo Conterno and Ornellaia, plus a collection of Grange spanning 1990 to 2003. Sublime Sauternes, from 1948 to 2003, features Château d’Yquem 1989 in bottle, double magnum and jeroboam.
Additionally, Sotheby’s is honoured to offer, on behalf of The Macallan distillery, a unique bottle of The Macallan 1962, the whisky featured in the Bond film “Skyfall,” signed by the leading actors Daniel Craig, Javier Bardem and Bérénice Marlohe. All proceeds from the auction of this lot will benefit the Government Communications Fund (GC Fund) that supports former and serving members of GCHQ facing hardship and distress.
Further rarities in this auction include 2.5 litre marie-jeannes of Château Rauzan-Ségla 1986 and a magnum of Louis Roederer Cristal Brut 1990 commemorating a 1997 dinner in Paris, etched with the names of 30 top producers from Bordeaux, Burgundy and beyond.
