Richard Charlton-Jones, Senior Director, Auctioneer, Sotheby’s London, joined Sotheby’s in 1982 from Peterhouse, Cambridge. He worked in British Paintings from 1982 until 1989 and was co-author of The British Portrait 1600–1950. He joined the Old Master Paintings Department in 1990 and specialises in British and early Netherlandish paintings. Among his many notable discoveries in this field may be counted Orazio Gentileschi’s Holy Family with Saint John, Jan Brueghel the Elder’s Aeneas and the Sibyl in the underworld and Cimabue’s Madonna and Child with two angels, the latter found in 2000 in the collections at Benacre Hall in Suffolk and subsequently sold by Private Treaty to the National Gallery in London.
