On 9–10 September, the wine collection of the late Nelson Doubleday, Jr., publishing scion and former joint owner of the New York Mets baseball team, will come to auction at Sotheby’s New York. Grandson of Frank Nelson Doubleday, who founded the publishing company bearing his name in 1896, Nelson’s life came to be defined by books and baseball. His great-great-granduncle Abner Doubleday was long, and as it turns out, erroneously credited with inventing the game of baseball. He was also an avid wine collector and in his life amassed a tremendous collection of some of the great names and vintages from Bordeaux, Champagne, the Douro and California. Click ahead to see some of the highlights of Nelson Doubleday, Jr.’s wine collection soon to be offered at Sotheby’s.
