The Nabis: Visions in Colour and Form

Mysterious and visionary, a group of 19th century artists known as the “Nabis” decided to embrace decoration as art’s primary function and free form and colour from their traditional descriptive functions. Sotheby’s November Impressionist and Modern sale features a rare masterpiece of Nabis sculpture, George Lacombe’s L’Aurore, as well as works by Paul Gauguin, Édouard Vuillard, Paul Bonnard and Paul Sérusier. The Nabis’ use of unmediated colour and emotion can be seen in the work of Claude Monet and Henri Matisse, as well as the Abstract Expressionists of the 20th century.
