French furniture makers created pieces for every possible function. Whether they were little tables or stylised armchairs, these distinct designs proliferated across living rooms throughout Europe. Beginning in the eighteenth century, inventories and catalogues in England and America used French language to describe specific types of furniture rather than trying to translate those terms. Being that France was the epicenter for style and taste, other countries adopted French phrasing, and Sotheby’s still does this in our auction catalogues today. Click ahead to learn some key French furniture terms so you can master them in time for our October European Decorative Arts auction.
