Contemporary Asian Art

Pioneering vision in Contemporary Korean and Japanese Art

Continuing the momentum we saw for Contemporary Korean and Japanese artists during our ground-breaking selling exhibition in March, the spring sale offered a fine selection of works by leading figures from the abstract movements – Park Seobo, Chung Sanghwa and Tanaka Atsuko. All achieved extraordinary results and were sold at multiple times of their previous auction records, demonstrating Sotheby’s vision in showcasing this category at auction.

Sotheby’s Contemporary Asian Art Department offers paintings, sculpture and works on paper from a diverse range of artists from China, Japan and Korea dating from the 1980s to the present day. Sotheby’s conducted the first ever dedicated sale of contemporary Asian art in October 2004 in Hong Kong. Since then, contemporary Asian art has rapidly emerged as one of the most dynamic sectors in the international art market with demand steadily growing.

Season after season, the department’s experienced team of specialists in Hong Kong, New York and London have produced record-breaking results and brought to market the most desirable examples of the genre available, including highly coveted works by celebrated artists such as Zhang Xiaogang, Zeng Fanzhi, Liu Wei, Fang Lijin, Yue Minjun, Ai Weiwei, Chen Zhen, Huang Yongping and Liu Xiadong.

Recently Sotheby’s held the world’s first auction of a private collection dedicated to Yoshitomo Nara’s works, You Are Not Alone – Yoshitomo Nara Works from the Kurokochi Collection, which achieved more than double the pre-sale estimate. In 2011, the sale of the Ullens Collection achieved $72 million and set the auction record for any single-owner collection of contemporary Chinese art.

Major sales of contemporary Asian art are held in April and October in Hong Kong.
