Over the course of a three-decades-long career, Zheng Chongbin (b. 1961, Shanghai) has systematically explored the intersections of the Chinese ink tradition and Western abstract painting. Trained in both China and the United States, Zheng’s distinctive, boundary-pushing practice joins classical Eastern thought and contemporary Western theories through tools and forms from both worlds, whether evoking the Daoist qi in acrylic with a Western-style brush, or biomorphic abstractions in traditional ink. With his original interactions of ink, acrylic, paper and light, Zheng considers materiality, geometry and gesture, illuminating the nature of perception and its connection to the world around us. His investigations extend to video and installation, including major public projects at INK studio in Beijing and the European Cultural Centre in Venice, Exhibited widely, he has been recognized with acquisitions by prominent institutions as Hong Kong’s M+ Museum, the Los Angeles County Museum of Art, and the Daimler Art Collection. At Sotheby’s Hong Kong Gallery, Zheng Chongbin: Structures presents important new works from this pivotal moment in Zheng’s career, including a carefully curated selection of his latest paintings alongside the Hong Kong debut of his environmental video installation, Chimeric Landscape (2015).
