This vase was found in the inventory of the famous marchand-mercier, Dominique Daguerre. Daguerre played, with Pierre-Philippe Thomire, a key role in the design of this type of vase known as 'Daguerre oval' or 'Daguerre rond'.
AUCTION DETAILS
The highlight of the auction is an exceptional pair of sofas designed in 1755 by the celebrated joiner Nicolas Heurtaut, which perfectly embody the Rocaille style that flourished at the end of the 1750s. They are a unique model, asymmetrical and with just a single headrest, and were also known as "chimeny corners" because they were originally intended to sit either side of a fireplace. Their well-documetned provenance states that they belonged to the Countess of Seran in the 18th century and the Prince of Beauvau in the 20th, before they were acquired by the famous antique dealer Jean Seligmann. The sculpture section of the sale includes a delicate marble Venus Italica by Canova, designed to take the place of the Medici Venus, which had been looted by napoleonic troops in 1802.
