Sotheby’s and Stack’s Bowers Galleries are delighted to announce the sale of the spectacular D. Brent Pogue Collection of early United States coins. The collection is composed of over 650 gold, silver, and copper coins, and is expected to be the most valuable collection of coins ever sold. The collection was begun in the 1970s by D. Brent Pogue with the active participation and encouragement of his father, Dallas real estate developer, A. Mack Pogue.
The collection’s primary focus is on the first coins produced by the United States between 1792, the year the Philadelphia Mint opened, and the late 1830s. It was a period of experimentation, and the designs were often guided by such neo-classical luminaries as Gilbert Stuart, Thomas Sully and Titian Peale.
Literally a collection of highlights the Pogue collection was assembled with patience and discernment, and contains many of the finest surviving examples from this formative period of United States history.
Replete with some of the greatest and most famous rarities known, a brief list of the some of the most exciting and noteworthy stars would include: two 1804 silver dollars (arguably America’s most famous coin) including the finest known example (originally presented by the United States government to the Sultan of Muscat in 1835); the astonishingly rare 1822 half eagle (five dollar gold piece) of which only three are known (and the other two are part of the National Numismatic Collection in the Smithsonian Institution); one of the finest extant examples of the first United States silver dollar made for circulation in 1794; a splendid example of a 1795 eagle (ten dollar gold piece), which may well be the finest surviving 18th century United States gold coin; and, as a coda, the 1854-S half eagle (five dollar gold piece), this astonishingly rare coin is the finest of only two known (the other is in the National Numismatic Collection), and was produced by the San Francisco Mint in its first year of operation during the very height of the California Gold Rush.
