Continuously breaking new ground since the seminal post-war period, contemporary Japanese photography displays extraordinary diversity in style, technique and philosophy. Artists from the 1960s to the present have built up a fascinating body of work – a fluid multiplicity of unique visual languages that collectively reflect, represent and reorient contemporary Japanese culture.
Presented by S|2 in Sotheby’s Hong Kong Gallery as a collaboration with Amana, Shashin! Japanese Photography Then/Now is the most exciting show of contemporary Japanese photography ever held in Greater China. Featuring a premium selection of artists, Shashin! brings together iconic vintage prints by the post-war greats, including Nobuyoshi Araki, Daido Moriyama, Shoji Ueda and Eikoh Hosoe, and places them in dialogue with dynamic works by internationally acclaimed young photographers such as Mika Ninagawa and Rinko Kawauchi. Also presented in the exhibition are representatives from the next generation of rising stars such as Yoshinori Mizutani, Kosuke and Maya Akashika.
