Results: Sotheby's June auction of American Paintings, Drawings and Sculptures concluded with a total of $4 million. The auction was led by William Wendt's The Silence of the Night, which achieved $268,000, more than double its high estimate of $100,000. Other highlights from the sale include works by Nicolai Fechin, William Trost Richards and John White Alexander.
Details: Our spring sale of American Paintings, Drawings and Sculpture features over 250 lots of works by many of America’s finest artists, including works from several noteworthy private collections and institutions. Among several works from the Art Institute of Chicago, is, Sunlight, by John White Alexander, a large and stunning example of this artist’s portrayal of the feminine figure in an elegant interior. From the South Hunterdon Regional High School with proceeds to benefit the memorial fund, the sale features an exceptional winter landscape by Pennsylvania Impressionist, Edward Willis Redfield. This work was given to the school by the artist and his family and has never been offered to the public before. Also included, a remarkable bronze sculpture by African-American sculptor, Elizabeth Catlett, Seated Woman. Outstanding works by Gaston Lachaise, Nicolai Fechin, William Trost Richards and many, many others too numerous to mention are on offer as well. Our afternoon session begins with a large and diverse group of over 70 works from a Corporate Collection, all offered with no reserve. We look forward to welcoming you to our galleries on 3 June.

The canvas has a light lining. The reason for the lining is a restoration above and slightly to the left of the figure's head in the upper background. There seems to be a thin break to the canvas here, running about 6 by 4 inches. Elsewhere throughout the entire picture there is no damage at all. The work may be very lightly varnished and it seems that it has never been cleaned. Quite frequently, one sees acidification of the burlap that Alexander favored as a support for his paintings. None of that is visible here. The paint layer is in lovely condition and although it may be dirty, the work could easily be hung in its current condition.|
