Contemporary Literati – A Gathering

Sotheby’s Hong Kong inaugural concept sale presenting contemporary ink paintings and works of art revered by scholarly collectors earned a total of HK$52 million, gathering a wide circle of literati enthusiasts at both the exhibition and sale. ‘Qilian’ Limestone ‘Bridge’ Scholar’s Rock, the top lot of the sale, fetched HK$3.64 million, alongside high prices for paintings led by works of contemporary ink masters Liu Dan, Li Huayi, Xu Lei, and Zeng Xiaojun. From paintings of grotesque rocks to ancient Buddhist sculptures and strange roots, these abstract works of nature continue to inspire artists in China today.

The sale aims at providing a pure aesthetic experience by presenting side by side some of the most exciting artists working in the ink medium today such as Liu Dan, Zeng Xiaojun, Li Huayi, Xu Lei, Tai Xiangzhou or Cai Xiaosong, together with a dashing array of objects that have for centuries inspired and continue to inspire painters today – grotesque tree roots, strange rocks and other abstract objects from nature.
