Quek Chin Yeow is Deputy Chairman of Sotheby’s Asia and Chairman of International Jewellery, Asia, based in Hong Kong. Mr Quek oversees the Company’s representative offices in Singapore, Indonesia and Thailand while directing jewellery business and client development efforts in the region together with Sotheby’s international team of jewellery experts.
In 1987, at the age of 29, Mr Quek was named Head of Sotheby's Singapore (one of the youngest regional representatives of Sotheby’s) and was responsible for launching the Southeast Asian Paintings sales in 1996 in Singapore as the expert-in-charge of that department. He also sat on several art committees in Singapore during his tenure in his home country.
Upon his move to Hong Kong in 1998, Mr Quek assumed the position of Head of Jewellery Department while overseeing the establishment of a number of regional Asian representative offices. He was appointed Deputy Chairman of Sotheby’s Asia in 2007 and is currently Sotheby’s principal auctioneer in Hong Kong.
Under Mr Quek’s leadership, Sotheby’s Jewellery Department has brought to the Asian auction market some exceptional and precious jewels, including a 8.41-carat fancy vivid purple pink diamond (a world auction record for a fancy vivid pink diamond; October 2014), the legendary Hutton-Mdivani jadeite bead necklace (a world auction record for any jadeite jewellery and a Cartier jewel; April 2014) which was acquired by The Cartier Collection, and a 118.28-carat D-colour flawless diamond (a world auction record for a white diamond and the biggest diamond ever sold at auction; October 2013). Among other notable jewels are a 6.04-carat fancy vivid blue diamond ring (world record price per carat for any gemstone at auction and record price paid for a Western jewel at auction in Asia; October 2007).
Mr Quek is an Economics major, and had completed post-graduate studies at London School of Economics. He also holds an MBA (Marketing) degree from the Business School of City University London.
