Rather than living in museum-like environments with a single prevailing style, many of today’s collectors have embraced eclecticism, filling their homes with works of art from across centuries and continents. Contemporary interiors are layered, reflecting the diverse interests of their inhabitants, who might juxtapose Abstract Expressionist paintings with Chinese furniture, or present an array of African objects on a Louis XVI console, or as our specialists Anu Ghosh-Mazumdar and Eric Shiner have done, pairing Indian works of art with paintings by contemporary artists. Click ahead to see their selections styled in dynamic interiors.
The first eight lots in the Modern and Contemporary South Asian Art sale are from the collection of a remarkable woman - Mrs. Helen Gordon. Wife of a senior American diplomat to India, Mr. Herb Gordon, Helen was a path breaker, visionary, educator and an ambassador for art and culture like few others of her generation. Sotheby's is honored to offer a selection of works from her collection.
Sotheby’s leads the field in 2018 for Asian art in New York. This past March, Sotheby’s New York’s eleven auctions of Asian art totaled $78.3 million, far exceeding its estimate of $50 million. Collectors from Asia, Europe and the Americas bid competitively for over 1,300 works of art spanning more than 3,500 years of history. Zhang Daqian’s Water and Sky Gazing After Rain in Splashed Color brought $6.6 million, the highest price for any Zhang Daqian painting sold outside of Asia and the top lot sold at auction across Asia Week New York. Other highlights include an exceptionally rare and important Xuande mark and period blue and white ewer which soared past its estimate of $600,000–800,000 to sell for $3.1 million, and a rare and large 13th century Tibetan bronze figure of Ekadashamukha Lokeshvara which brought $1.6 million.
