Description

The frame is inscribed: HANS MAKART THE MODERN RUBENS / The Five Senses /  The Austrians in their pride in the greatest artist their country has produced are fond of calling Hans Makart the modern Rubens.  And indeed, in sumptuous color and dashing technique there is much affinity between the two.  Makart was born on May 29th, 1840 in the city of Salzburg.  He entered the Academy at Vienna, where he had Ruben for a professor.

An almost identical plaque sold, Christie's, The Mr. and Mrs. Marvin Greenfield Collection of Porcelain, Russian Enamels and 19th Century Decorative Art, New York, October 20, 2008, lot 38 ($74,500)
