There were many rediscoveries in the auction and the excitement this generated strong bidding, particularly for Pre-Raphaelite pictures. Sir Edward Burne-Jones' monumental watercolour If Hope were not, Heart Should Break achieved a price of £329,000 more than three times the presale estimate.
Presenting the finest examples of 19th- and 20th-century British artists, our 14 July sale features a wonderful selection of paintings, watercolours and drawings that illustrate the strength and breadth of British art from the 19th century to early 20th century. Many works consigned to this sale come from private collections and haven’t been seen on the art market for decades.
If you would like to organise a time to view any of the pictures prior to the presale exhibition, please do not hesitate to contact a member of the department.
