Results: Sotheby's New York auction of Master Paintings on 26 May totaled $4,841,875. Leading the auction was Sandro Botticelli's An angel, head and shoulders which sold well above its estimate for $1,090,000 (est. $300,000-500,000). Other highlights of the sale included Valentin de Boulogne's David with the Head of Goliath which sold for $490,000 and Jean-Baptiste Oudry's Still Life with a Violin, a Recorder, Books, a Portfolio of Sheet of Music, Peaches and Grapes on a Table Top which sold for $610,000.
Auction Details: Gabriel Metsu’s magnificent Dutch interior leads the May 26 Master Paintings sale in New York. Among the greatest Dutch genre scenes left in private hands, this masterpiece has only been on the market once in modern times. Other highlights include Sandro Botticelli’s An angel, head and shoulders, a new addition to the artist’s corpus, and an impressive David with the head of Goliath by the most important French Caravaggesque artist, Valentin de Boulogne. On offer will also be a fine group of early Italian works from an Italian private collection and a selection of important French 18th century paintings from a New York private collection.
