Five sales of Chinese Works of Art totalled HK$893.6 million/US$114.6 million. The Pilkington Collection of Chinese Art brought HK$502.8 million/US$64.5 million, tripling pre-sale estimate. Top lot was a Blue and White Yongle Moonflask which achieved HK$110.52 million/US$14.2 million, tripling high estimate. The Seal of the Mandate of Heaven sold for HK$92.6 million/US$11.9 million, setting a world auction record for a Kangxi Imperial Seal.

AUCTION DETAILS

This outstanding collection of thirty jades, porcelains and works of art encapsulates the taste of the Qing court for the archaic and sublime. Passionately acquired from international auctions over two decades, they are all superb examples within their individual categories, and are endowed with illustrious provenances including Yamanaka, J.T. Tai, Arthur Sackler, Manno Art Museum and Henry Gibson of Philadephia, the renowned American gilded age collector. The highlight of the sale is two exceptional Imperial works of art from the Qianlong period: a pair of Imperial albums, each enclosing an ink painting by the Qianlong Emperor, delicately composed in the style of Ni Zan and embellished with an archaistic jade; and a magnificent Mughal-style white jade ram’s cup.
