This May’s auction of 19th & 20th Century Sculpture at Sotheby’s saw robust results for Neoclassical and Romantic marbles. The sale was led by the monumental Nude by Amleto Cataldi, which reached a final price of £87,000. Other strong prices were achieved by Antonio Frilli’s Oriental Girl, which also sold for £87,000 against an estimate of £40,000-60,000; and Charles Adrien Prosper d’Epinay’s A la Mer, which made £81,250, against an estimate of £40,00-60,000. British New Sculpture bronzes continued to achieve high prices, with Leighton’s The Sluggard achieving a final result of £17,000 against an estimate of £7,000-10,000.
Sotheby’s market-leading sculpture sale is headed by an important group of marbles, including a superb Eve by Scipione Tadolini. The auction includes works from distinguished private collections, featuring two beautiful marbles by the American sculptor William Wetmore Story and his son Thomas Waldo Story, as well as fine bronzes from a Paris residence.
