The Bernheimer Burg Marquartstein sale achieved a strong total of £2,365,750, above its high estimate, with 96% of its lots sold. This eclectic sale, revealing the breadth of collecting of the Bernheimer dynasty, presented a few surprises, with a set of four stone profile reliefs achieving £100,000 from an estimate of £4,000-6,000. The important set of four Renaissance columns, possibly from Mantua, lead the sale, being sold for £137,000.
The collections at Burg Marquartstein reveal the extent of the dealing and collecting of several generations of the Bernheimer family. A Bavarian castle nestled in a valley between Munich and Salzburg with breathtaking Alpine views, Burg Marquarstein was furnished and decorated by Konrad O. Bernheimer with the existing family collection as well as many later personal acquisitions. Highlights such as the sculpture collection, formerly at the Italian Courtyard at Palais Bernheimer, and the contents of the castle’s captivating attics, featuring pieces that were once part or a product of the firm’s workshops, are only a part of the remarkable history of the great Bernheimer dynasty.
Please note that lots with a low estimate below or equal to £4,000 will be sold without a reserve price. These lots will be marked with a □ symbol.
