RESULTS
Our sale of 19th Century European Paintings established a new auction record of £2,045,000 (US$3,175,680) for Vilhelm Hammershøi and any Danish work of art. The price for Interior, Strandgade 30 far exceeded the pre-sale estimate of £700,000-900,000 as the work attracted strong international interest from Scandinavia and North and South America.
Overall the sale achieved a total of £5,590,375 against a pre-sale estimate of £3,312,000-4,766,000. An auction record was also established for Dutch artist Petrus van Schendel, whose The Market Place, Rotterdam sold for £449,000, while Franz von Stuck’s The Dragon Slayer achieved £605,000, doubling its low estimate. Works by Lovis Corinth, Mihály Munkácsy, Joaquín Sorolla and Emile Claus also sold for well over their high estimates.
AUCTION DETAILS
Outstanding works by many of the leading European artists active around 1900 define our London sale of 19th Century European Paintings on 21 May 2015. From Scandinavia the auction is led by two quintessential interiors, one by Vilhelm Hammershøi, Interior, Strandgade 30, the other by Carl Larsson of the sitting room of Lilla Hytnas. Other highlights include two impressive panel paintings, one the recently re-discovered Dragon Slayer by Franz von Stuck, the other The Market Place, Rotterdam by Petrus van Schendel, the master of nocturnes.
